Auto Mechanics and Service Technicians must be paid hourly wage in addition to a "piece" rate basis for repair work.
In Gonzalez v. Downtown LA Motors (4/2/13) --- Cal.App.4th --- the Court of Appeal held that the subject technicians must be paid a separate hourly minimum wage in addition to the "piece rate" for service work. The separate hourly minimum wage must be paid because the employees spent time during their work shifts waiting for vehicles to repair or performing other non-repair tasks directed by the employer.
